Fading for a Cover-Up

What Is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Laser tattoo removal uses Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser technology to deliver short pulses of energy that target tattoo pigment. The pigment is broken into smaller particles, which are gradually cleared by the body as the tattoo fades over time.

Tattoo removal is a gradual process and every tattoo responds differently, which is why treatment is planned and reviewed individually.

Every Tattoo Responds Differently

Your treatment plan is based on the individual characteristics of your tattoo. During your consultation, we assess the factors that may influence its response to laser treatment and use this information to guide your treatment approach.

Tattoo Colour

Different tattoo pigments respond differently to laser wavelengths, making colour an important part of treatment planning.

Age & Ink Density

The age, depth and density of tattoo pigment can influence how a tattoo responds, which is considered when planning your treatment approach.

Previous Treatment

If your tattoo has previously undergone laser treatment, we consider its treatment history and current appearance before recommending further treatment.

Individual Response

Progress varies between clients, which is why we review your tattoo throughout the treatment course and adjust treatment planning according to its response.

Tattoo Removal Is a Gradual Process

Most tattoos require a course of treatments rather than a single session. The number of treatments varies according to factors such as tattoo colour, ink density, depth, age, location and individual response.

We review your progress throughout your treatment course and adjust your plan according to how your tattoo responds. While complete removal cannot be guaranteed, your consultation allows us to discuss what may be realistically achievable for your individual tattoo.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQs

Clear answers about tattoo removal, preparation, downtime, aftercare and treatment suitability.

How much does laser tattoo removal cost?

Laser tattoo removal is priced per treatment session, with cost based on the size and characteristics of the tattoo. Your tattoo is assessed during consultation so we can confirm the appropriate treatment category and price before treatment begins. Small - from $99 per session Medium - from $249 per session Large - from $349 per session

How many tattoo removal treatments will I need?

Tattoo removal usually requires a series of treatments rather than a single session. The number needed varies considerably depending on factors such as the tattoo’s age, colour, ink density, depth, size, whether it was professionally or amateur applied, and whether it has previously been treated. Some tattoos begin fading noticeably within the first few sessions, while dense, layered or multi-coloured tattoos may require a longer treatment course. During your consultation, we assess these factors and discuss what a realistic treatment journey may look like for your individual tattoo. We then review its response as treatment progresses rather than committing you to a fixed number of sessions from the beginning.

Can all tattoo colours be treated?

Different tattoo pigments respond differently to laser wavelengths, so some colours are generally easier to target than others. Black and darker pigments tend to respond particularly well because they absorb the 1064nm wavelength effectively. Red, orange and some warmer pigments may respond to the 532nm wavelength. Colours such as yellow, white and some lighter greens can be more resistant, while blues, greens and purples can vary depending on the specific pigment used. Many tattoos also contain combinations of pigments rather than one straightforward colour. During your consultation, we assess the colours present and explain which areas are likely to respond more readily and which may be more challenging to fade.

Will my tattoo disappear completely?

Complete removal is possible for some tattoos, but it cannot be guaranteed. Some tattoos may fade very significantly, while others can retain areas of residual pigment even after a full treatment course. Factors such as ink colour, density, depth, tattoo age, scarring within the tattoo and individual response can all influence the final outcome. We prefer to assess the tattoo and give you realistic expectations rather than promising complete removal before treatment has even begun.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Laser tattoo removal can feel uncomfortable, although the sensation and intensity vary from person to person and between treatment areas. Clients commonly describe the laser pulses as a quick snapping or hot sensation. Because tattoo removal treatments are performed in short bursts and treatment time depends on the size of the tattoo, smaller areas can often be completed relatively quickly. During your consultation we’ll explain what the treatment feels like, what you can expect during your appointment and any considerations specific to the area you are having treated.

What will my skin look like after tattoo removal?

An immediate reaction in the treated area is normal. The skin may temporarily appear white or “frosted” immediately after the laser passes over the tattoo, followed by redness, warmth or swelling. Depending on the tattoo and individual response, some clients may also experience blistering, crusting or tenderness during healing. The area needs to be treated like healing skin following your appointment, which is why correct aftercare is an important part of tattoo removal. We provide clear instructions after treatment so you know exactly how to care for the area.

Is there downtime after tattoo removal?

There is usually some healing time following treatment, although this does not necessarily mean you need to take time away from normal daily activities. The treated area needs to be kept clean, protected and cared for appropriately while the skin recovers. Activities that create unnecessary heat, friction, irritation or contamination may need to be temporarily avoided. We provide aftercare instructions specific to your treatment so you know what is normal, what to avoid and when the area can return to your usual routine.

How long do I need to wait between tattoo removal treatments?

Tattoo removal sessions are deliberately spaced apart. The skin needs adequate time to heal, and the body also needs time to gradually process the pigment particles fragmented during treatment. Treating the tattoo again too soon does not simply make removal happen faster and may unnecessarily increase stress on the skin. Your treatment interval will be recommended according to the tattoo, treatment area, healing response and how the tattoo is progressing throughout your course.

Can you treat a tattoo that has already had laser removal elsewhere?

In many cases, yes. Previous laser treatment does not automatically mean we cannot continue treating the tattoo. However, we need to assess how the tattoo has responded, how much pigment remains, whether there has been any scarring or change to the skin, and what treatment has previously been performed. If you know what device or wavelength was previously used, that information can also be helpful during your consultation.

Are professional tattoos harder to remove than amateur tattoos?

They can be. Professional tattoos often contain a larger amount of pigment that has been deposited more consistently and sometimes more deeply into the skin. They may also contain multiple colours or layered ink. Amateur tattoos can sometimes contain less pigment and may therefore respond more quickly, although their depth and application can also be inconsistent. This is another reason we assess the actual tattoo rather than estimating treatment purely from its size.

Can I have only part of a tattoo removed?

Yes. Laser can be used to target selected areas of a tattoo where appropriate. This may be useful if you want to remove a particular element, lettering or section while keeping the remainder of the tattoo, or if you are fading an area in preparation for a tattoo cover-up. Selective removal requires careful treatment planning, particularly where the part being removed sits very close to pigment you want to keep, so we assess this during consultation.

Can tattoo removal be used to fade a tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes. Complete removal is not always the goal. Some clients choose laser treatment specifically to reduce the density of an existing tattoo so their tattoo artist has greater flexibility when designing a cover-up. The amount of fading required will depend on the existing tattoo and the cover-up you are planning. If you already have a tattoo artist involved, their requirements can also help guide the treatment goal.

Do I need a consultation before tattoo removal?

Yes. A consultation is required before your first tattoo removal treatment so we can ensure the treatment is suitable and appropriate for you. We assess your tattoo colour, density, size and location, your skin, medical and treatment history, any previous laser treatment, and what you would ultimately like to achieve. This allows us to identify any factors that may affect treatment suitability, discuss realistic expectations, recommended treatment intervals and aftercare, and create an individual treatment plan before you decide whether to proceed.
